Datasets still in progress
As part of Google's transition from the Fitbit Web API to the new Google Health API, Fitabase is moving all Fitbit data collection to the new platform. During that work, we've confirmed that there are some datasets still in progress on Google's side. These datasets are planned for the new Google Health API, but delivery will not occur before participants' required reauthorization to this new API.
Because of this, we're extending all active Fitbit projects through Jan. 1, 2027 if they are set to end prior to that date, and we will proactively backfill the few remaining datasets unavailable today.
Some important notes about this update:
- Your project's end date will be updated for you. You don't need to request or sign anything for this extension to apply.
- This is a no-charge extension.
- All data collected so far remains available in Fitabase's charts and exports.
Datasets that are currently outstanding (this list will be updated as they're made available via the Google Health API):
- Intraday Calories
- Intraday METs
- ECG
- SpO2
What this means for your study
Do I have to keep collecting data until the new end date? No. The extension keeps your project open; it doesn't require you to keep participants enrolled. If your study ends earlier, you can stop data collection whenever you're ready. You should delay actively disconnecting or deleting Google accounts.
Does this affect my IRB approval or consent forms? The extension is on the Fitabase side only. If you do decide to collect data beyond your approved study period, check with your IRB first.
Do my participants need to do anything? Not because of this change. However, if you have a study in which participants are actively being observed past October 30, you'll need to have them reauthorize their Fitbit accounts as part of the Google Health API migration. See our migration guide for details.
I had Google create me temporary Demo Accounts that participants connected to. Do I need to do anything? Google is aware of our plan and will extend these for you. Please request extensions through Google's Issue Tracker platform.
